Could injured Zheng Qinwen make comeback in Shenzhen as soon as September?
Zheng Qinwen may have had elbow surgery only days ago, but she has been named in China's team for September's Billie Jean King Cup finals in Shenzhen, raising the possibility of an early comeback. Advertisement Olympic champion Zheng said on Saturday that she would be out for weeks, if not months following arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow, and on Monday her withdrawal from the US Open at the end of August was confirmed. But on Tuesday, organisers of the Billie Jean King Cup – formerly the Federation Cup and contested annually between women's national teams – announced that Zheng had been selected by her country for this year's edition, to take place from September 16 to 21. The organisers also said: 'Nations can make up to four changes to their squads until one day before the event start date.' Should world No 6 Zheng feature in Shenzhen, she will have recovered from surgery and regained match fitness within two months. Olympic Tennis Champ Zheng Says Elbow Surgery 'Successful'
Sixth-ranked Zheng Qinwen of China has undergone arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow after experiencing persistent pain for several months. The 22-year-old Olympic champion, who lost in the first round at Wimbledon to Katerina Siniakova, said on Saturday the surgery was a success. 'Over the past months I've been dealing with persistent pain in my right elbow during training and matches. Despite trying various treatments to manage it, the discomfort never fully went away,' the right-handed player said in an Instagram post. 'After consulting with elbow specialists and discussing thoroughly with my team, we decided that arthroscopic surgery was the best option to fully resolve the issue. Yesterday I underwent the procedure successfully, and I'm grateful to have it behind me.' Zheng wrote she'll be recovering over the next few weeks and months.
